Micron Delays Construction Timeline for Semiconductor Fabs

BREAKING: Micron Technology has just announced significant delays in the construction of its semiconductor fabrication plants in Clay, New York. Under a revised timeline released in the project’s Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS), the building of four fabs will now be pushed back by several years, impacting thousands of future jobs and local development plans.

The company is still set to begin tree clearing this year, but construction for the first two fabs will not start until later than previously anticipated. Fab 1 is now scheduled to begin construction in the second quarter of 2028 and will not commence operations until the third quarter of 2030—a delay of two years. Fab 2 is expected to follow, with construction starting in the last quarter of 2030 and opening pushed back to the last quarter of 2033, representing a three-year setback from original projections.

In addition, the timeline for fab 3 has shifted by two years, now starting in the third quarter of 2035, while fab 4 will see a one-quarter delay, with completion slated for 2041. The FEIS also outlines changes to essential facilities, including a childcare site that will now begin construction in 2028 instead of 2026, and health care and recreation centers delayed from 2030 to 2032.

The delays in the construction schedule mean that operational workers will not arrive at the Micron Campus as initially planned, prompting a change in securing necessary warehouse space, which has now been rescheduled for November 2028. The phased construction will unfold over approximately 16 years, contingent on obtaining required permits and approvals.

Despite these changes, Micron officials have confirmed that the overall timeline for the final construction of the Micron Campus, including fab 4, remains set for 2041. Full production output from all four fabs is expected to generate over 9,000 permanent onsite operational jobs by 2045.

This revised timeline is crucial not only for Micron’s future but also for the local economy, which stands to benefit from the influx of jobs and economic activity. As the semiconductor industry continues to face challenges, including supply chain disruptions and market fluctuations, the impact of these delays will be closely monitored by industry analysts and local stakeholders.

NEXT STEPS: All eyes will be on Micron as the company works to navigate these delays and fulfill its commitments to the community and its workforce. The next significant updates are expected as construction begins and further details emerge regarding job creation and community development initiatives.
