Winter Park Doctor Avoids Charges in Alleged Underage Drinking Party

UPDATE: A Winter Park physician, Hao Nhu Tran, will not face criminal charges after allegations surfaced regarding an alcohol-fueled house party for minors that sent a 15-year-old girl to the hospital last month. Authorities confirmed that Tran, aged 51, was arrested on October 12, 2023, for contributing to the delinquency of a minor and providing alcohol to someone under 21.

Police reported that Tran knowingly allowed an open house party at her Chestnut Avenue home, creating a dangerous environment for several minors. Despite this, prosecutors announced on Monday that they would not proceed with charges, citing that “evidence at trial will not overcome one or more affirmative defenses.” Details regarding these defenses remain unclear.

The incident occurred shortly after midnight on October 11, when Winter Park police received calls about minors who were “falling down drunk” at Tran’s residence. According to her arrest affidavit, Tran claimed she was hosting an event for children from her son’s school, but uninvited guests from other schools also attended.

Upon arrival, officers discovered empty alcohol containers, including High Noon and Smirnoff, discarded in trash bags within the kitchen. Tran reported that the 15-year-old girl had “passed out” and was found in an upstairs bedroom. After ensuring the girl was breathing, Tran contacted the girl’s mother, who subsequently called 911. Emergency responders transported the girl to a local hospital, where she was found to be vomiting and barely coherent.

The girl’s mother informed police that she did not wish to press charges against Tran, despite indicating that Tran had initially hesitated to call for medical assistance. Tran’s medical practice focuses on the treatment of ear, nose, and throat diseases, as outlined in her profile with AdventHealth.

As this case unfolds, it raises significant concerns about the responsibilities of adults hosting gatherings for minors and the potential consequences of underage drinking. Follow for further updates as more information becomes available.
