BREAKING: The University of Maine football team just secured a commanding 28-14 victory over Stony Brook, marking their fifth consecutive win on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Morse Field in Orono. This triumph signifies the Black Bears’ first five-game winning streak since the 2018 season, when they made history by reaching the Football Championship Subdivision playoff semifinals.
UMaine now stands at 5-4 overall and 4-1 in the Coastal Athletic Association, while Stony Brook drops to 4-5 and 2-3. The game took a decisive turn early in the third quarter when the Black Bears scored two touchdowns just 2:23 apart, extending their lead to 28-7.
The action kicked off with a seven-play, 79-yard drive that culminated in a 1-yard touchdown run by graduate quarterback Carter Peevy, his sixth of the season. Highlighting this drive was a significant 44-yard pass from Peevy to Aaron Arteaga, marking Arteaga’s third catch of the season.
Just moments later, the momentum shifted again as Stony Brook’s quarterback, Quinn Boyd, lost the ball during a sack, allowing UMaine’s Kye Pressley to recover it at the Seawolves’ 15-yard line. Three plays later, Peevy connected with freshman running back Daniel Batch for a 14-yard touchdown pass, marking Batch’s first career touchdown.
Stony Brook attempted to rally late in the game, scoring on a 1-yard run by Roland Dempster with just 40 seconds remaining. However, UMaine recovered the ensuing onside kick to clinch the victory.
Earlier in the game, UMaine surged ahead with a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter, including an 11-yard TD pass from Peevy to Mo Irefin and a 24-yard touchdown run by Sincere Baines. Peevy finished with 188 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 51 yards.
Defensively, UMaine’s performance was impressive, limiting Dempster to just 22 rushing yards on 14 carries, a stark contrast to his average of 111.3 yards per game. The Black Bears’ defense also sacked Boyd five times, maintaining their streak of two consecutive games with five sacks.
With this victory, UMaine is poised for a critical matchup against Hampton next Saturday at 1 p.m., while Stony Brook will host North Carolina A&T at noon. Fans can expect heightened excitement as the Black Bears look to extend their winning streak and secure their place in the conference standings.
