UPDATE: Maeve McErlane has made a triumphant return to the court for the CU Buffs women’s basketball team after a lengthy 20-month recovery from injury. The junior guard played in an exhibition game against the Colorado School of Mines on Wednesday, marking her first appearance since March 8, 2024.
McErlane, who previously starred at DePaul, expressed her excitement saying, “It’s just surreal,” highlighting the emotional significance of being back on the court with supportive teammates and coaches. Her last official game was marred by a torn labrum in her hip, sidelining her entire 2024-25 season.
Despite the game being unofficial, McErlane’s performance was noteworthy. She scored 2 points and attempted 8 shots, finding the net only once. However, her focus remained on the team experience rather than individual stats. “The bench and the coaches were lifting me up,” she stated. “Just being a part of an environment like that is truly something special.”
CU Buffs head coach JR Payne praised McErlane’s resilience and positivity, stating, “It’s wonderful to see her back on the floor, especially a kid like Maeve.” Her return not only uplifts the team morale but also highlights her hard work and dedication throughout the offseason.
As a valuable addition to the Buffs, McErlane joins a talented roster of guards including Kennedy Sanders, Desiree Wooten, and Anna Gooden. Her experience from DePaul, where she averaged 4.6 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 2.9 assists in the 2023-24 season, positions her as a steady presence in the lineup.
Reflecting on her recovery, McErlane credited trainers Chris Miller and Adam Ringler for their support, stating, “They have done so much to put my body in a position to be out there.” This preparation allowed her to focus solely on executing her role for the team without the burden of past injuries.
Prior to the game, McErlane admitted to feeling pre-game nerves, but described them as excitement rather than anxiety: “Going into games you want to have those nerves. It helps get your adrenaline going and keeps you focused.”
The CU Buffs women’s basketball team looks forward to what promises to be an exciting season with McErlane back in action. Fans are eager to see how the team’s dynamic evolves as they prepare for the upcoming challenges.
