Donald Dicklich, Former St. Louis County Auditor, Dies at 72

BREAKING: Donald Dicklich, a prominent figure in Minnesota’s public service and healthcare sectors, has passed away at the age of 72 after a courageous fight against esophageal cancer. He died on October 27, 2025, leaving a legacy of dedication to his community and family.

Dicklich, a graduate of Hibbing Schools in 1971, was a cherished member of the 1970 Minnesota State Championship Hockey Team. He furthered his education at the University of Minnesota, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business, later upgrading to an MBA. His commitment to education and personal growth shaped his professional journey.

In June 1975, Don married Mary Zanoni, and together they raised two daughters, Gina Marie and Dawn Michele. His diverse career began at U.S. Steel Corp., where he played key roles at the Mintac Mine and Plant, eventually transitioning to healthcare administration at what is now known as Essentia Health for 14 years.

Don’s public service continued as he took on the role of Administrative Manager/CFO at the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board, an economic development agency for Minnesota. His most notable appointment was as the St. Louis County Auditor-Treasurer, a position he held for nearly 15 years, having been elected to three consecutive terms before retiring in January 2019.

Throughout his life, Dicklich was actively engaged in his church, serving on multiple boards, including as President of the Men’s Club and participating in the choir. His dedication to service and community left an indelible mark on those who knew him.

He is survived by his daughters, Gina Lund and Dawn Verdone, alongside his siblings Ron (Samantha) Dicklich, Diana (Paul) Broste, and Cherilyn McEnery. His family also includes five nieces, a nephew, eight grandnieces and grandnephews, and his beloved granddaughter, Kennady Lund, who was the apple of his eye.
