UPDATE: The Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) field hockey team has made headlines by securing a thrilling 1-0 victory in the first round of the playoffs, thanks to a late goal from Tenley Layne. This marks a significant milestone for the Panthers, who are now set to face the top-seeded Cherry Creek High School in the quarterfinals on Thursday, October 31, 2025.
The eighth-seeded Panthers showcased their determination and skill in a tightly contested match against No. 9 Mountain Vista. Layne’s goal not only clinched the win but also highlighted her remarkable journey, having picked up a field hockey stick just four years ago. Now a senior captain, she leads the team with 11 goals and 12 assists this season.
“It feels amazing to contribute to the team’s success,” Layne said. “I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and it’s thrilling to see our hard work pay off.”
The team’s success is rooted in the efforts of senior captains Lyla Jolly and Courtney Windt, who fought for the establishment of a high school field hockey program after starting as eighth graders. Their dedication and fundraising efforts have turned their vision into reality, allowing the Panthers to evolve from a junior varsity team to a competitive varsity squad in just a few years.
“This team has come so much further than I ever could have pictured,” Jolly expressed. “It feels like a sports movie come to life.”
Under the guidance of head coach Allyse Mullen, the Panthers have achieved unprecedented success this season with a record of 12-3-1. Mullen praised her players for their commitment and teamwork, noting that several players are ranking among the state’s best in points.
The Panthers now face a daunting challenge against Cherry Creek, a powerhouse in Colorado field hockey. However, their recent performance has instilled a sense of confidence as they prepare for this pivotal matchup.
“We’re ready to test our skills against the best,” Windt said. “It’s a chance to prove ourselves on a bigger stage.”
As the playoffs continue, the excitement around the BVSD field hockey team grows. Their journey, marked by determination and community support, inspires many and adds to the growing popularity of the sport in the region. Fans and supporters eagerly await the quarterfinal clash, hoping for an upset against the formidable Cherry Creek team.
