LAX Shuts Down Terminal 5 for Demolition Ahead of 2028 Olympics

UPDATE: Terminal 5 at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is officially closed as of today, marking the start of demolition in preparation for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This significant development follows an announcement from Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), revealing that three airlines are relocating to streamline operations.

Effective Tuesday, October 24, 2023, JetBlue has already moved to Terminal 1, with Spirit Airlines shifting to Terminal 2. American Airlines will finalize its transition to Terminal 4 today, completing the exit from Terminal 5 and enabling demolition to commence immediately.

“This closure marks a pivotal moment in our journey to deliver a world-class airport experience,” stated Doug Webster, Chief Airport Operations and Maintenance Officer at LAWA. “We are committed to minimizing disruption and are collaborating closely with our airline partners to ensure smooth travel for our passengers.”

In conjunction with these moves, LAX has recently opened the newly completed Midfield Satellite Concourse South, an extension of the West Gates at the Tom Bradley International Terminal, which adds over 150,000 square feet and eight gates to the airport’s capacity. This extension supports the growing number of travelers expected for major events like the 2026 World Cup and 2027 Super Bowl.

The closure and subsequent reconstruction of Terminal 5 are part of LAWA’s ambitious $30 billion Capital Improvement Program, aimed at enhancing airport facilities ahead of the influx of visitors expected over the next few years. Plans include improved roadways, an Automated People Mover, and a Consolidated Rent-A-Car Facility, all designed to enhance the passenger experience.

Officials are also unveiling a new branding campaign for LAX, which will feature terminals inspired by Los Angeles culture, history, and sports. These upgrades are set to transform the airport into a modern gateway that reflects the vibrant spirit of the city.

As LAX prepares for its ambitious renovations, travelers and airport staff are urged to stay informed about ongoing changes and the anticipated impacts on flight operations. For the latest updates, passengers can check the LAWA website and follow official announcements.

This is a crucial moment for LAX, as it transitions towards becoming a premier international travel hub, ready to welcome the world in just a few short years.
