Barton Community College hosted the Kansas Community College Corequisite Symposium on March 15, 2024, uniting nearly 100 educators from across the state. The event aimed to enhance corequisite instruction in English and mathematics by facilitating discussions among faculty, support staff, and administrators from 16 of Kansas’ 19 community colleges.
The one-day symposium, themed “developing a winning playbook together,” encouraged participants to exchange ideas and strategies to improve student outcomes and equity in corequisite education. This collaborative approach is crucial as Kansas community colleges transition from traditional developmental education to a corequisite model, which integrates college-level courses with additional support.
Stephanie Joiner, Dean of Academics at Barton Community College, emphasized the importance of the event. “We were so proud to host and facilitate this important conversation in support of students,” she stated. “Community colleges are uniquely skilled in providing access to higher education. This symposium was an example of those skills in action. There was a lot of productive collaboration and dialogue.”
The agenda featured sessions on various topics, including Math and English Corequisite Instruction, Advising Support, Academic Coaching, Integrity in the Corequisite, and Support in Online Formats. These sessions aimed to equip participants with practical tools and techniques to enhance their teaching practices.
In addition to the in-person sessions, attendees also gained access to an evening Zoom session designed for those unable to travel. This aspect of the symposium further emphasized the commitment to fostering a collaborative educational community.
Barton Community College’s initiative to host the symposium reflects a broader movement within the education sector to prioritize student success and equity. By focusing on corequisite education, institutions aim to better support students in their academic journeys.
