Urgent: Cherished Artist Cheryl Jean Husby Passes Away at 76

UPDATE: Renowned artist and beloved community member Cheryl Jean Husby has passed away at the age of 76. She died peacefully surrounded by family on October 14, 2025, at St. Luke’s Hospital. Her family is deeply mourning the loss of a vibrant soul who touched many lives.

Cheryl, a Minneapolis native born on December 30, 1948, was not only an accomplished artist but also a cherished mother, grandmother, and friend. She graduated from U-High in 1966 and went on to earn several degrees, including a B.F.A. in 1983 and an M.F.A. in 1986 from prestigious institutions. Her creative journey included founding Husby Pottery, which allowed her to travel across the country, including annual stays in the Florida Keys.

Cheryl’s life was filled with passion for art, nature, and community service. She was recognized for her artistic talent, winning 1st place in clay at the Coconut Grove Art Festival. A staunch advocate for the arts, she served on boards for the Duluth Art Institute and the Duluth Preservation Alliance. Her legacy includes not just her artwork but also the countless gatherings she hosted, from festive New Year’s celebrations to lively artist potlucks.

Her family remembers her joy in simple pleasures, like baking the best apple pie, gardening, and cheering on her children and grandchildren. “Cheryl had a gift for bringing people together,” said her husband Bob Husby. “Her spirit will live on in our hearts and the memories we cherish.”

Cheryl is survived by her husband Bob, son Seth Draper, daughter Elissa Husby, and grandsons Zane and Noah Draper. She is also remembered by her sisters, Barbara Swango and JoAnn Mancuso, and brother George Chergosky, along with many loving cousins, in-laws, and friends.

Visitation will take place on November 5, 2025, at 10:00 AM at First Lutheran Church, located at 1100 E. Superior Street.
