A new apartment complex named Holy Family Haven has officially opened in Clarkston, featuring 72 affordable housing units. The project was inspired by students from Holy Family Catholic School, who contributed ideas and artwork that reflect the community spirit. According to Jonathan Mallahan, executive director of Catholic Charities Housing, half of the units are already occupied, with more families moving in shortly.
The grand opening ceremony included a blessing from a priest and was attended by city officials, community members, and representatives from Catholic Charities and the Horizon Housing Alliance. Mallahan expressed gratitude for the involvement of the students, stating, “It was so nice to have all of the Holy Family students there to celebrate the grand opening.”
During the event, Mayor Monika Lawrence praised the project, noting the commitment of John Pilcher, executive director of Horizon Housing Alliance, who had assured the community of a “top-notch housing project.” Pilcher emphasized that Holy Family Haven is not merely a shelter but a supportive community where families can thrive.
Community Impact
According to Mallahan, approximately 30% of the units remain available for families in need. Interested applicants can reach out to Catholic Charities for more information on eligibility and application procedures. “It’s not just a place to live,” Mallahan remarked. “It’s a foundation for families to make lasting changes in their lives and achieve their goals.”
The complex, located at 1411 Port Drive, will provide a range of support services alongside the apartments. This includes mental health counseling, substance abuse recovery support, transportation to medical appointments, senior support, and employment assistance. Furthermore, the initiative includes a plan for distributing fresh, healthy food to residents.
Financial Support
The establishment of Holy Family Haven was made possible through significant financial backing. KeyBank Community Development Lending & Investment provided $31.4 million for the construction. Of the total units, 70 are designated for families and individuals earning no more than 30% to 60% of the area median income, while 35 units are specifically reserved for those who have experienced homelessness.
Applications for the apartments can be submitted through the website housing.cceasternwa.org/how-to-apply. The opening of Holy Family Haven marks a significant step forward in addressing affordable housing challenges in Clarkston, providing a much-needed resource for families striving for stability and support in their lives.
