Governor Newsom Demands Apology After Artillery Shell Incident

UPDATE: California Governor Gavin Newsom is calling for an apology from former President Donald Trump and Ohio Senator JD Vance after a live artillery shell detonated during a Marine Corps celebration, narrowly missing civilians. The incident occurred on Saturday over Interstate 5, during a training exercise commemorating the Marine Corps’ 250th anniversary.

Authorities confirmed that the shell exploded prematurely, striking two vehicles, including one from Vance’s motorcade. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Newsom’s office expressed outrage, stating, “The shrapnel that hit CHP (California Highway Patrol) vehicles came from this ordnance. It’s no small thing.” The governor also criticized the White House for allowing such a dangerous demonstration over a major freeway.

In a series of posts on X, Newsom emphasized, “Donald Trump and JD Vance put lives at risk to put on a show. If you want to honor our troops, open the government and pay them.” His comments followed a warning issued last week regarding the planned live-fire exercise, which he deemed hazardous to public safety.

Vance’s office dismissed Newsom’s concerns as an overreaction, with communications director William Martin stating, “The Marine Corps says it’s an established and safe practice.” However, the California Highway Patrol noted that the use of live munitions over active roadways is “highly uncommon.” CHP Border Division Chief Tony Coronado remarked, “This was an unusual and concerning situation,” emphasizing the need for public safety.

In response to the incident, Newsom’s office demanded accountability, directing a message to Vance and Republican Rep. Darrell Issa, stating, “An apology is owed — to not just Californians, but all Americans.” The First Marine Expeditionary Force, which hosted the demonstration, is currently investigating the incident and insists that safety protocols are in place.

As the fallout continues, the public is left questioning the safety measures during military exercises and the implications of such displays. The incident has sparked a heated debate over military practices in civilian spaces, with the potential for significant political ramifications.
