Jennifer Ott Transitioning to City Manager Role in Hayward

Jennifer Ott, the current City Manager of Alameda, will assume the role of City Manager for Hayward on December 8, 2023. This transition marks a return to Hayward for Ott, who previously held positions as Deputy City Manager and Assistant City Manager before taking on her role in Alameda in November 2022.

The City of Hayward announced the appointment this week, highlighting Ott’s extensive experience in local government. Mayor Mark Salinas expressed enthusiasm about her return, stating, “The Council and I are thrilled to welcome Ms. Ott back to Hayward.”

Ott’s Accomplishments in Alameda

During her tenure in Alameda, Ott made significant contributions to the city as its chief executive. Her leadership was noted for advancing various initiatives and community projects that were vital to local development. In a statement from the City of Alameda, Mayor Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft acknowledged Ott’s impact, saying, “Jen has been an outstanding City Manager, and we will miss her.”

Following Ott’s departure, the Alameda City Council is expected to appoint an interim City Manager in the month following her exit. Ott’s move has been met with mixed emotions, as her leadership style and dedication have left a positive mark on the community.

Bringing Experience Back to Hayward

With over 25 years of experience in local government, particularly within Alameda County, Ott is well-equipped to tackle the challenges awaiting her in Hayward. Her academic qualifications and practical knowledge of municipal governance position her to effectively navigate the complexities of her new role.

Upon accepting the position, Ott expressed her excitement in a statement, saying, “I am very excited for the opportunity to join former and new colleagues at the City of Hayward and meet the immediate challenges and future opportunities together.” Her return is anticipated to bring a wealth of experience and insight that will benefit the Hayward community.

As Ott prepares for this transition, both cities are reflecting on her contributions and the potential for future collaboration between them. The leadership in Hayward looks forward to her insights, while Alameda begins the search for a new City Manager to fill her role.
