Neddy Latimer Honored as Shelter Namesake in Leominster Ceremony

LEOMINSTER — The community gathered on October 16, 2023, to honor Neddy Latimer, the longtime Executive Director of the Spanish American Center, during a naming ceremony for a new shelter that will provide support to those in need. The facility, now called the Neddy Latimer House, represents a significant milestone in the ongoing commitment to serve vulnerable populations in the area.

The atmosphere was filled with joy as attendees celebrated Latimer’s contributions to the community. Doug Bushman, Executive Director of the Fitchburg Housing Authority and CEO of Opportunities for Hope, emphasized the importance of the shelter, calling it “a beacon of hope.” He acknowledged Latimer’s advocacy for families and children, stating, “Neddy said we have to do this, there are children and families in need.”

Bushman highlighted the collaborative effort that brought the shelter to fruition, noting that various organizations, including the Spanish American Center and the United Way of North Central Massachusetts, invested over $3 million to ensure the building met necessary standards. He expressed pride in the team that made the project possible, affirming their dedication to creating an inviting space for those seeking assistance.

Mayor Dean Mazzarella also spoke at the event, expressing admiration for Latimer’s nearly four-decade commitment to community service. He remarked, “Neddy is really the story of us,” acknowledging her unwavering dedication to providing for the underserved. Mazzarella humorously noted the challenges of saying no to Latimer when it comes to funding critical projects, eliciting laughter from the crowd.

Bushman extended gratitude to the United Way for their essential role in funding the shelter project, which began its journey in December 2023. Kory Eng, President and CEO of the United Way of North Central Massachusetts, praised Latimer’s leadership, emphasizing that the Spanish American Center consistently stays ahead in addressing community needs. Eng commented, “This program is about people regaining their dignity,” reflecting the core mission of the newly named shelter.

Thomas Hughes, Chair of the Board for both the Fitchburg Housing Authority and Opportunities for Hope, described the ceremony as “a celebration and a declaration of gratitude.” He noted Latimer’s profound impact on the community, saying, “Neddy has shaped this community in ways that words cannot describe.” He characterized the Neddy Latimer House as more than just a physical space; it symbolizes compassion and care for those seeking help.

As the ceremony unfolded, Neddy Latimer’s husband, Jose Latimer, looked on with pride, visibly moved by the recognition of his wife’s lifelong dedication to community service. Following emotional speeches, Neddy herself addressed the audience, expressing her gratitude. “I am humbled and honored,” she said, emphasizing the significance of the shelter in fostering hope.

The ceremony concluded with a toast led by Bushman, who remarked, “What a great day.” Attendees were then invited to tour the shelter, which features a welcoming atmosphere, and enjoy refreshments. Father Julio Granados from the Holy Family of Nazareth Church offered a benediction, encapsulating the spirit of the event by stating, “There is goodness in every one of us, and Neddy has taught us that.”

The Neddy Latimer House stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of community leaders and organizations committed to providing support to those in need, ensuring that Latimer’s legacy of compassion and service continues to inspire future generations.
