Decatur, TXGeary Lewis Washburn, a respected tax consultant with a career spanning more than five decades, died peacefully on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, surrounded by loved ones at the age of 85. His funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, at the First Baptist Church in Decatur, with burial following at Oaklawn Cemetery.

Washburn’s passing marks the end of an era for a man deeply embedded in his community, both as a trusted business advisor and a devoted family patriarch. Known for his approachable nature and commitment, Washburn ran his tax consulting business for over 51 years, developing lasting friendships with many of his clients who considered him more than just a consultant.

A Life Rooted in Family and Service

Born on June 14, 1940, in Alvord, Texas, to Odie L. and Nora (Nikirk) Washburn, Geary graduated from Alvord High School, where he showcased leadership as the co-captain of the football team. He married Linda Ann Stevens on December 8, 1961, beginning a partnership that lasted over 64 years.

Beyond his professional life, Washburn was active in community organizations, serving as president of the Decatur Rotary Club and as church treasurer at the First Baptist Church. His hobbies included summer stays at the coast, farm life involving livestock and fishing, and indulging in the Western novels of Louis L’amour, which he often shared with his family.

Funeral Details and Surviving Family

The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service. John Hogan and Gerre Joiner will officiate, and pallbearers include Kyle Stephens, Brian Whaley, David Cowan, Rhett Wallace, Ray Mosely, and Rusty Rhine. Honorary pallbearers are Melton Neighbors, Joey Green, Bobby Wilson, Don Ogle, Max Holloway, and Marion Yale.

Geary Washburn is survived by his wife, Linda Washburn of Decatur; two sons, Steve Washburn and wife Laurie of Decatur, and Lance Washburn and wife Emily of Kaufman; and five grandchildren, including Fallon Cowan and husband David, Hallie Nicole, Geary Newman, and Emma Lane Washburn. He also leaves behind a brother, Bobby Washburn, and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Harold Washburn. Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur is managing arrangements.
