West Virginia Rescue Team Saves Man Trapped Under Overturned ATV for Nearly Five Hours
A 76-year-old West Virginia man was rescued after being trapped beneath an overturned four-wheeler for nearly five hours in rugged terrain near Willow Creek on the Mason-Putnam County line, emergency officials report.
The dramatic rescue unfolded after the Mason County Sheriff’s Office called on their specialized K-9 unit to locate the stranded man. K-9 Deputy Chris Connor and his two-year-old canine partner, Chica, were deployed to track the victim through difficult terrain. According to Connor, the search brought a moment of high emotion and faith as he prayed, even writing the man’s name on his arm for guidance.
“I prayed one more time, even had his name written on my arm. And then, I heard a voice calling back to me,” Connor said. Within 30 minutes, using Chica’s unrelenting tracking skills combined with drone support from the Valley Volunteer Fire Department, responders pinpointed the man’s location.
“When we started tracking, her nose never came up. She was down on the trail,” Connor explained. “She is such a good girl.”
The victim had been trapped after crashing his ATV into a tree in the rough, wooded area near the county border. After discovering him, first responders quickly freed the man and he was airlifted to the hospital for emergency treatment.
The sheriff’s office praised the deft teamwork that brought the man to safety, highlighting the cutting-edge combination of K-9 tracking and drone technology in search and rescue operations on challenging terrain.
“We are extremely proud of our K-9 team and the fire and other first responders involved,” the Mason County authorities said.
Rough Terrain Poses Danger for ATV Riders Nationwide
This case underscores the dangers of off-road vehicle accidents in remote areas, a risk familiar to outdoor enthusiasts across the country including Colorado residents who often explore similar rugged landscapes. Effective search techniques using K-9 units and drones are proving invaluable for swift rescues when time is critical.
The use of an aerial drone in the search effort highlights how technology is increasingly integrated into first response tactics. In areas with dense forests and uneven ground, drones provide an aerial vantage point to locate victims faster, while trained dogs like Chica track scent trails impossible for humans to follow alone.
