Edgartown Council on Aging Unveils Full May Schedule of Vital Senior Services and Events

The Edgartown Council on Aging (ECOA) ramps up community support with a diverse lineup of in-person programs and essential services this May at The Anchors senior center, under Director Lyndsay Famariss. Residents are urged to register early as activities promise new wellness offerings, engaging cultural events, and critical health resources.

Memorial Day Closure: Note that The Anchors is closed Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day, but regular activities resume immediately after this federal holiday.

Weekly Wellness, Social, and Transit Services to Keep Seniors Active

A robust schedule runs every week from Monday through Friday — including seated yoga at 9:30 a.m. Mondays, Edgartown bowling and lunch at 11:30 a.m. for only $10 reserved for local residents, plus afternoon bridge games and scenic Katama walks. Tuesday and Friday feature an indispensable Edgartown Shopping Shuttle that picks up residents at home to essential stops like Stop & Shop, pharmacies, and the post office. Registration is required by noon Friday for the Tuesday trip and noon Wednesday for Friday.

Other weekly highlights include Yoga with Carol Vega Tuesdays at 9 a.m., knitting circles, Tai Chi classes with Nan Doty on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and social meet-ups like Ladies Coffee on Thursdays at 11 a.m. and the Men’s group Friday mornings.

Key Special Events Spotlight Health, Arts, and Community Engagement

The month spotlights critical health services like the Wellness Clinic with blood pressure checks on May 5, 12 to 1 p.m., and appointments for Hearing checks with Shawn Woodbrey on May 13. Haircuts remain popular on May 11 and May 18 with seasoned stylist Dee Dee, offering affordable rates of $20 for cuts, $30 for cuts with blow-dry by appointment only.

Cultural events provide enrichment including pianist Adele Dreyer’s “Keys to Spring” program May 14 at 1 p.m. and a special performance by renowned guitarist David Mintz on May 29 presenting the “Great American Songbook.” Mintz is also a cultural council grant recipient, highlighting the importance of the arts in senior wellness.

For civic engagement, the center hosts Coffee with a Cop on May 12 at 11 a.m. offering a direct line to local law enforcement for safety and community dialogue.

On May 19 during lunch, Patti Roads from the Edgartown Surveyors Office will discuss the residential exemption process, key for homeowners navigating property tax benefits. Technology assistance ramps up on May 22 with Drop-in Tech Help by Rizwan Malik alongside the screening of the PBS documentary “Aging in America: Survive or Thrive” followed by a live Zoom discussion, addressing national aging concerns that resonate broadly including in Colorado.

Sight loss services are spotlighted on May 26, featuring Rhonda Garan, Executive Director of Sight Loss Services Cape Cod, who will provide vital information and resources to those living with vision challenges in the community.
