A litter of puppies rescued by US soldiers in the Middle East is on a mission to reach America. In late December 2023, a group of US Army soldiers discovered two puppies struggling in an oil pit used for vehicle maintenance. This rescue came after the soldiers had spotted a total of five puppies wandering near their base a few weeks earlier.
“It was cold and raining, and they were running around near the compound looking for anything they could eat,” said Smith, a US Navy veteran involved in the rescue. The identities of the soldiers and their location remain undisclosed for security reasons. Initially, the soldiers tried to help the puppies by offering them milk and scraps of tuna, but the animals were too timid to approach.
After the dramatic rescue from the oil pit, the puppies, which are now approximately five months old, continue to stay close to the military base. An American charity, Paws of War, is working to ensure these puppies reach the United States safely. According to Robert Misseri, the co-founder of the organization, the situation on the ground is fluid, causing delays and increased costs associated with their relocation.
With each rescue costing up to $10,000, Paws of War is currently attempting to relocate a total of 30 animals, primarily from the Middle East. “Conditions are changing daily, and with flights getting canceled globally, it is taking more time and more money to do each rescue,” Misseri explained.
The organization has already faced significant challenges, including the cancellation of five booked flights for the puppies due to the ongoing conflict in Iran. Misseri expressed determination, stating, “With our troops putting their lives on the line for our country, we will do everything possible to make these rescues happen.”
Sgt. Lee, one of the soldiers who helped rescue the puppies, shared her hopes for the future. “It would be a huge relief for the litter to make it safely to America,” she stated. She looks forward to reuniting with one of the puppies, named Akila, after her deployment ends. “I just want to spoil my puppy and let her experience being a real puppy, not fighting to stay alive.”
The journey to bring these puppies home not only highlights the compassion of military personnel but also underscores the ongoing efforts of organizations like Paws of War to reunite service members with the animals they rescue. As logistical challenges persist, the commitment to these animals remains unwavering, with hopes that they will soon find a loving home in the United States.
