Mary Ruth Ingleby, a cherished educator and advocate for children and animals, passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 7, 2025, at the age of 75. Her long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease marked the latter part of her life, but her legacy as a devoted teacher and compassionate community member endures.
Born on June 22, 1950, in Salt Lake City, Mary was the third of six children born to Don and Lavon Ingleby. Growing up in a large family fostered her deep commitment to nurturing and educating young minds. At the age of sixteen, a pivotal moment in her life occurred when she was compelled to place her first child for adoption. This experience profoundly influenced her, igniting a passion for teaching that would define her career.
Mary pursued an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education from Cabrillo College, equipping her to inspire young learners. She dedicated many years to teaching children aged three to five, including her second son, Damian. His love for reading and learning can be traced back to the foundational skills and encouragement he received from his mother.
Having found her home in Santa Cruz for over five decades, Mary embraced the coastal community. Her love for the ocean was matched only by her compassion for animals. She actively supported local causes aimed at protecting vulnerable populations, dedicating her time and resources to these efforts.
Music was another integral part of Mary’s life. She participated in various choirs and singing duos, ensuring that the sound of music was a constant presence in her home. Her enthusiasm for singing, dancing, and the arts brought joy to those around her.
In her later years, Mary joyfully reconnected with her first child, Bill. Their relationship blossomed, allowing them to create meaningful memories together until his untimely passing in his mid-30s. Mary is survived by her second son, Damian, and her younger sister, Colette.
A memorial gathering to celebrate Mary’s life will take place at Seacliff State Beach on October 18, 2025, at 12:00 PM. Friends and family are encouraged to join in honoring her legacy. For more details, contact 406-552-9696 or email [email protected].
