BREAKING: Marin Catholic’s dream season came to a sudden halt on July 15, 2025, as they were defeated by King’s Academy (Sunnyvale) with a score of 85-73 in the opening round of the NorCal Division-I boys basketball championships. This shocking loss occurred at their home court in Kentfield, California, just moments ago.
The No. 8 Wildcats, despite a strong start and a halftime lead, could not withstand the relentless offensive pressure from the No. 9 Knights. “What an incredible season,” exclaimed first-year coach Kevin Vasquez. “I told the team, don’t let one game take anything away from what we did. It was truly a magical season.”
Marin Catholic, finishing the season with a record of 24-5, was not expected to capture the MCAL title when the season began. However, after clinching the title, they received an invitation to the North Coast Section open division playoffs, where they won one of their two games, culminating in their appearance in the NorCal D-I playoffs.
The Wildcats started strong, leading at halftime, 40-37, thanks in part to a remarkable performance from Oliver Myers, who scored 11 of his team-high 16 points in the first half. Senior captain Joe Hammond noted, “We were confident coming into this game, but they were a very, very skilled team.”
King’s Academy, boasting a record of 24-4 and the defending D-III NorCal champions, showcased their prowess with five players reaching double figures. The standout was Adrian Barnett, who led the Knights with 20 points and nine rebounds.
Despite Marin Catholic’s valiant efforts, including a brief tie at 58-58 early in the fourth quarter, the Knights surged ahead, capitalizing on rebounds and fast breaks to secure their victory. Coach Vasquez acknowledged the defeat, stating, “We lost to a very good team without a doubt.”
While the atmosphere in the locker room was somber, coach Vasquez emphasized the significance of the season. “There were a lot of sad kids in that locker room. But when they are able to look back on the season without emotion, they are going to realize what they accomplished.”
As the Wildcats reflect on their journey, they have laid a strong foundation for future success. The emotional impact of this season will resonate, providing valuable experience for the players moving forward.
Stay tuned for updates as Marin Catholic looks to build on this season’s achievements in the coming years.
