Mavericks Triumph at Home, Securing Team Title in Tennis Shootout

The Marshall Mavericks showcased their resilience and talent by capturing the team championship at the Maverick Varsity Tennis Shootout on February 19, 2024. The event took place at Marshall High School and East Texas Baptist University, drawing a competitive field of ten teams, including Carthage, Pine Tree, Daingerfield, and Gilmer.

As the tournament progressed, the outcome became uncertain. Pine Tree completed its matches nearly 90 minutes ahead of the final courts, establishing a significant lead in the team standings. This put pressure on both Marshall and Carthage. However, the Mavericks mounted a late surge that shifted the momentum in their favor.

A pivotal moment came when junior Jace Johnson secured the Boys A Singles championship. Johnson demonstrated exceptional skill, defeating Trip Rumbo of Daingerfield in the first round, followed by straight-set victories over Ryland Durmon of Queen City in the semifinals and Joao Lopes of Linden-Kildare in the finals. His performance delivered crucial points that revitalized Marshall’s chances.

The most decisive factor emerged in the Girls B Doubles division, the tournament’s largest bracket. The Mavericks achieved an impressive sweep, with teams claiming first, second, and third places. The duo of Madison Crawford and Aaliyah Galvan triumphed to secure the championship title. Teammates Audry Ellis and Soriyha Scott finished second overall, while Karyington Childress and Caroline Lee added a third-place finish. This outstanding effort generated a significant swing in the team standings, energizing the home crowd.

Marshall’s scoring contributions extended beyond the doubles events. In the Girls A Singles category, Parker Splawn overcame a challenging bracket to earn fourth place, adding valuable points. Additionally, in Girls A Doubles, Maggie Hammett and Kate Nafe continued their strong season with another medal finish, while Emma Miller-Alvarado and Kolton Robinson secured third place in Mixed Doubles.

When the final scores were tallied using the tournament’s cumulative scoring format, Marshall emerged victorious with a total of 147.5 team points, narrowly surpassing Carthage, which finished with 145.0 points, and Pine Tree at 140.0. This result marked one of the closest finishes of the season.

Head Coach Doug Carter commended the team’s perseverance and collective effort throughout the long day of competition. “This was a true team win,” Carter stated. “Our players kept competing even when we were behind, and every bracket mattered. Seeing different players step up across the tournament and finish strong was special.”

The victory underscored the growing depth of the Mavericks’ program, as contributions came from nearly every lineup position. With momentum building and confidence rising, Marshall Tennis is poised for a successful spring season. The Mavericks aim to carry this energy into their upcoming competitions in the weeks ahead, showcasing their determination to excel in the sport.
