BREAKING: The CIF-Southern Section playoffs for girls basketball and soccer kicked off on February 12, and a total of 13 teams from the High Desert are set to advance to the second round. This urgent update comes as six basketball teams and five soccer teams secured their spots for the next round scheduled for Saturday.

In basketball, Mira Costa edged out Oak Hills with a final score of 45-39. Despite a strong start from the Bulldogs, who led 18-12 at the end of the first quarter, a devastating second quarter left them trailing at halftime. The Bulldogs struggled with injuries, including a broken finger for Kahlis Carlton, and managed only two points in that quarter. Mira Costa will now face Valencia in the next round.
Meanwhile, Silver Valley stunned the No. 2 seed in Division 6 by defeating Valley Christian 54-51. Naomi Durrah was the standout player with 35 points, securing the victory with a free throw just two seconds before the buzzer. The Trojans will host Warren next.
In another thrilling clash, Barstow emerged victorious over Coastal Christian with a close 47-45 score. Emily Franco led the Aztecs with an impressive 25 points. Barstow will face Burroughs in the upcoming round.
In a dramatic finish, University Prep triumphed against Anaheim 40-38, with Camila Zapeta hitting the game-winning shot with 19 seconds left on the clock. They will now host Norwalk.
The Victor Valley Christian Royals celebrated their first playoff victory since 2020, defeating Saddleback 28-26. Olivia Metler led her team with 10 points. The Royals now prepare to host Santa Clarita Christian.
On the soccer field, Granite Hills dominated Culver City with a score of 4-2, led by Lianna Tsabur’s four goals. The Cougars are on a roll, set to host Temescal Canyon next.
In addition, Riverside Prep shut out Gahr 5-0, with Jimena Nunez scoring twice. They will travel to Segerstrom for the next challenge.
The Adelanto Saints secured their spot with a solid 3-0 victory over Temecula Prep, marking their third consecutive advance to the second round.
