The Martin House Children’s Advocacy Center in Longview, Texas, officially commenced construction on a new facility aimed at supporting abused children and their families on March 15, 2024. This new building, measuring 10,000 square feet, will nearly triple the size of the current facility located on Garfield Drive. The expansion responds to the increasing demand for services in East Texas, as the center seeks to accommodate a larger number of children and families in need.
According to the nonprofit organization, the new space will provide a child-friendly environment that enhances confidentiality for victims of abuse. “The new facility will create child-friendly spaces more suitable for the specific services offered,” the Martin House stated. The design includes separate waiting areas for forensic and therapy clients, as well as dedicated office spaces for staff and collaborative work areas for law enforcement and social services.
The Martin House has been actively fundraising for this significant project, with a total goal of $6.25 million. As of now, 94% of the necessary funds have been secured. Michael Clements Jr., the capital campaign chair, expressed optimism about the project’s progress during the groundbreaking ceremony.
Community Support at Groundbreaking Ceremony
The ceremonial groundbreaking, held on March 15, 2024, saw participation from various community leaders and supporters. Among those present were Roxanne Stevenson, CEO of the Martin House; Melanie Mathews, chair of the board of directors; Bill Stoudt, Gregg County Judge; and Kristen Ishihara, Mayor of Longview. Attendees included board members, staff, local officials, and campaign committee members, all united in their support for the initiative.
As one of 72 child advocacy centers in Texas and approximately 800 nationwide, Martin House plays a crucial role in the region. The center reports serving more than 900 children and their families each year, providing essential services to those affected by abuse. With the construction of this new facility, the organization aims to further enhance its ability to assist vulnerable populations in a safe and supportive environment.
The commitment to improving services for abused children underscores the importance of community involvement in addressing such critical issues. As the new building takes shape, the Martin House looks forward to expanding its outreach and continuing to make a positive impact in the lives of those it serves.
