Museum Launches First LGBTQ+ History Programme in Newark

The National Civil War Centre in Newark is set to launch its inaugural LGBTQ+ history programme, titled **Pride in the Past**, throughout February, coinciding with LGBTQ+ History Month. This initiative aims to illuminate the rich and diverse narratives of LGBTQ+ individuals and communities, celebrating their contributions and experiences that have significantly shaped history.

The programme features a series of events and displays designed to engage visitors with remarkable tales and objects that showcase the lives, loves, and identities of LGBTQ+ individuals throughout history. Among the highlights is a Roman coin depicting **Emperor Hadrian**, whose deep affection for his lover **Antinous** led him to deify him and establish a city in his honor. Other exhibits will include **posy rings**, tokens of affection that reflect the connections between **James I** and his favorites, and the secretive language of **Polari**, once used by pirates and travelers, which became a means of communication for those concealing their identities.

Engagement and Community Involvement

**Rowan Cozens**, deputy leader and portfolio holder for heritage, culture, and the arts at the Newark and Sherwood District Council, emphasized the importance of inclusive historical narratives. “History is richer and more fascinating when we look at it from every angle. By shining a light on LGBTQ+ stories, we’re hoping this programme sparks curiosity, conversation, and a sense of belonging for all our visitors,” Cozens stated.

The museum will host numerous opportunities for community engagement throughout the month. Notably, author **Gareth Russell** will present insights from his new book, **Queen James**, which explores the life and relationships of James I. In addition, the museum’s **Creative Influencers** and artist in residence, **Robbie Belkom**, will conduct workshops that include crafting love-heart keyrings and sessions on puppetry and identity. Furthermore, **MusicWorks** will facilitate a community choir, allowing participants to come together in performing the uplifting anthem **Just Be You**.

A Collaborative Effort

The **Pride in the Past** programme has been developed in collaboration with **CJ Debarra**, a queer historian and author who has played a vital role in uncovering and sharing these historical narratives. This initiative is part of the **Open Doors** arts programme, which is funded by **Arts Council England** and implemented by the Newark and Sherwood District Council. It aims to provide an inclusive platform for people of all ages and backgrounds, whether they identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community or not.

As Newark takes this significant step towards recognizing and celebrating LGBTQ+ history, the National Civil War Centre invites everyone to participate in exploring these remarkable stories that have often been overlooked.
