OpenAI Enhances ChatGPT’s Temporary Chat Feature with Personalization

OpenAI is introducing a significant upgrade to the temporary chat feature in its ChatGPT service. This enhancement will enable users to maintain personalization within temporary chats while ensuring that these conversations do not influence their overall account settings. The temporary chat mode, which allows users to start with a fresh context, previously did not utilize any past conversation data or saved memories, even if memory was enabled.

The temporary chat functionality operates under a “don’t remember this” principle, meaning that individual sessions are not saved in chat history and are not used to improve the AI models. Recent updates, however, now allow temporary chats to access user personalization, including memory, chat history, and style preferences, while still retaining their status as temporary. Users can opt to turn off this personalization feature if they choose. For security purposes, OpenAI may retain a copy of these temporary chats for up to 30 days.

To initiate a temporary chat, users simply need to open a new chat and select the pill-shaped “Temporary” button located in the top-right corner of the interface.

Additional Features and Age Prediction Model

In conjunction with the temporary chat upgrade, OpenAI has also rolled out a new age prediction model for ChatGPT. This feature estimates a user’s age based on their conversation patterns and behavior. While this model aims to enhance user experience, OpenAI advises that it may not be entirely accurate. In some cases, adult users may be misidentified as teenagers, leading to account restrictions. Conversely, younger users may be incorrectly categorized as adults.

Restricted accounts can still engage in learning and creative interactions but will have limitations on discussing certain sensitive topics, including violence and challenges popularized on platforms like TikTok. If adult users find themselves incorrectly restricted, they can verify their age to regain full access to the capabilities of ChatGPT.

These updates reflect OpenAI’s ongoing commitment to improving user experience while balancing safety and personalization in its AI products.
