On January 13, 2024, the Fitchburg community demonstrated remarkable solidarity by hosting the Kids Winter Coat Giveaway, aimed at ensuring local children face the winter months warmly and confidently. The event, held at 110 South Street, successfully distributed 132 brand-new winter coats to children and families in need, showcasing the power of collaboration among community partners.
Organized by Empower Children for Success (ECFS), the giveaway brought together nonprofit leaders, local businesses, and families in an environment focused on care and connection. Unlike typical clothing drives, this initiative emphasized dignity by providing only new coats, reinforcing the belief that every child deserves respect and pride during challenging seasons.
“This event was about more than coats,” said Marites MacLean, President and Co-Founder of ECFS. “It was a reflection of our commitment to dignity, equity, and community, and a reminder to families that they are seen, supported, and valued.”
The event’s success was bolstered by partnerships with Operation Warm and North End Subaru. North End Subaru played a crucial role by ensuring the efficient delivery of coats, allowing organizers to address family needs swiftly. Jason Cote, Manager of North End Subaru, emphasized the importance of community engagement, stating, “Partners like Empower Children for Success are the shining example of what it means to give to the community.”
The collaborative effort also included the skilled staff from Making Opportunity Count (MOC), who facilitated the distribution process with professionalism and care. Their efforts ensured a smooth experience for families, from organizing coat sizes to creating a welcoming atmosphere. “MOC’s mission is to empower families to achieve economic security by eliminating barriers and creating opportunities,” said Mariana Burgos, Director of Enrollment & Family Service at MOC.
For many families, the rising cost of living poses significant challenges, often forcing difficult choices described as a “rent-or-eat” reality. By alleviating the financial burden of purchasing quality winter clothing, the Kids Winter Coat Giveaway offered not only physical warmth but also relief and solidarity during a demanding season.
This initiative serves as a testament to what can be achieved when nonprofits, businesses, and community organizations align their resources around a shared mission. The collective impact of ECFS, MOC, Operation Warm, and North End Subaru has helped prepare 132 children for winter while reinforcing a sense of community support.
As families left the event equipped for the cold months ahead, the sense of warmth extended beyond the coats themselves—demonstrating the profound effect of community collaboration. The January 13 event stands as a powerful reminder that together, communities can make a lasting difference in the lives of their members.
