URGENT UPDATE: Cal Poly Humboldt has officially welcomed its new president, Dr. Richard Carvajal, who began his tenure this week. Carvajal, previously the president of Valdosta State University, is not only the university’s first Latino president but also a first-generation college graduate. His leadership comes at a crucial time as the university aims to grow enrollment while navigating a challenging funding landscape.
In a press release, CSU trustee and presidential search committee chair Leslie Gilbert-Lurie praised Carvajal’s “proven record of spurring growth and fostering positive change.” With a goal to nearly double enrollment from a low of just over 5,000 students in the 2021-2022 academic year, Carvajal is committed to sustainable growth that maintains the quality of education.
On his first day, Carvajal shared his personal connection to Humboldt County, where he spent part of his childhood. He reminisced about living in a one-bedroom cabin along the Van Duzen River in Carlotta, emphasizing that this area is “very much home” to him. Carvajal’s experiences with homelessness and housing insecurity provide him with a unique perspective on the challenges faced by many students.
“We’re in the opportunity business,” Carvajal stated, highlighting the transformative power of higher education. “Commencement is my favorite day of every year. It’s the greatest honor of my life that I get to hand students the degree that they have earned.” Carvajal’s focus on student success aligns with the university’s recent achievement of a 3.8% enrollment growth, nearly double the CSU system’s rate.
As he settles into his role, Carvajal aims to enhance the educational experience and expand academic programs to further boost enrollment. He is determined to engage with students, faculty, and the community, stating, “I want our students to know who their president is.” His initiatives began with “Donut Day,” where he offered treats to the Cal Poly community as part of his effort to connect with everyone on campus.
Looking ahead, Carvajal will oversee the university’s strategic plan to ensure responsible growth while maintaining a strong support system for students. He acknowledged the importance of listening to student feedback about what they cherish about their university experience.
As Cal Poly Humboldt embraces this new chapter under Dr. Richard Carvajal, the community watches closely. His leadership promises to bring both growth and a renewed sense of purpose to the institution, making it a pivotal time for the university’s future.
Stay tuned for more updates as Carvajal’s initiatives unfold and the impact on enrollment and student success becomes clearer.
