Staten Island Students Bring Roald Dahl’s Fantasy to Life in ‘Willy Wonka, Jr.’

Young performers at St. Joseph Hill Academy in Arrochar, Staten Island, captivated audiences with their recent production of “Willy Wonka, Jr.” The show, which ran earlier this month, showcased the students’ dedication and creativity over an intensive 11-week rehearsal period.

Under the guidance of the Spotlight Theatre Company, a not-for-profit organization, the cast brought to life the whimsical world created by author Roald Dahl. The story follows Willy Wonka, the eccentric owner of a famous chocolate factory, as he invites five children who find Golden Tickets to an exclusive factory tour. Timeless songs such as “The Candy Man” and “I’ve Got A Golden Ticket” added to the magic of the performance, entertaining both children and adults alike.

Eileen Gregor, the Early Childhood Director and Afterschool Club Director at St. Joseph Hill Academy, expressed pride in the school’s commitment to inclusive programs. “We offer after-school activities for every student,” she stated. “Our theater program remains a true gem that younger students eagerly anticipate joining when they reach fifth grade.”

The performance marked the 11th production by Spotlight Theatre at the academy, featuring a cast of 36 young actors from fifth to eighth grade. Briella Gaeta, an eighth-grader who portrayed the spoiled Veruca Salt, shared her experience: “Spotlight has given me so many new friendships that I will forever cherish.”

The Spotlight Theatre Company operates year-round, providing opportunities for both youth and adult actors. Many participants have earned credits in various productions across Staten Island and beyond. Sixth-grader Angeline Lahoud remarked, “It is so touching to know that everyone in Spotlight supports you.”

Emma Leone, another eighth-grader who took on the title role of Willy Wonka, reflected on her time with the theatre club: “Working on ‘Willy Wonka, Jr.’ was just the best. Some of the best memories I have are made with the best cast and crew ever.”

Gregor emphasized the importance of the production in fostering creativity among students. “Putting on ‘Willy Wonka, Jr.’ allowed the students to take part in building a world,” she noted. “The dedication these students have shown in capturing the heart and whimsy of this classic story is truly remarkable. Watching these students perform on stage always amazes me.”

The success of the theater program is attributed to the collaborative efforts of many individuals, including Jacques Stewart, director and artistic director; Gavin Matthias, musical director; Mary Lee Marson Aloia, producing director; Kim Fiorello, production manager; Julie Azzarello, Spotlight Theatre Club supervisor; Principal Lawrence Hansen; Assistant Principal JP Pablo; and Sr. Mary Coffelt, president of St. Joseph Hill Academy.

“Our theater program at St. Joseph Hill Academy Elementary School aims to provide students with a space to take creative risks,” Gregor explained. The collaboration with the Spotlight Theatre Company has significantly enriched the students’ experiences.

As the students celebrated their successful performances, the production not only provided entertainment but also fostered a sense of community and artistic growth that will leave a lasting impact on both the performers and their audience.
