Cody Bellinger Secures $162.5 Million Deal with Yankees

Cody Bellinger has officially agreed to a five-year contract worth $162.5 million to return to the New York Yankees. According to a report by ESPN‘s Jeff Passan, this deal makes Bellinger the final high-profile free agent hitter to settle with a team. The agreement, which is contingent upon a successful physical examination, was confirmed by a source familiar with the negotiations who requested anonymity.

As part of the contract, Bellinger will receive a $20 million signing bonus and a full no-trade clause. The contract also includes opt-out options after the 2027 and 2028 seasons, allowing Bellinger to become a free agent again. Notably, if a work stoppage occurs that results in no games being played in 2027, these opt-out provisions will be adjusted accordingly.

Bellinger had an impressive season in 2023, hitting .272 with 29 home runs and 98 RBIs. His performance at Yankee Stadium was particularly notable, where he recorded a .302 batting average, alongside 18 home runs and 55 RBIs. The left-handed hitter participated in 149 games in the outfield and seven at first base, marking a successful return after a season in 2022 that was marred by injuries.

Recognized for his talent, Bellinger was named the National League Rookie of the Year in 2017 and secured the NL MVP award in 2019. Over his career, which spans eight seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs prior to joining the Yankees, he has maintained a career batting average of .261 with 225 home runs and 695 RBIs.

Before signing with the Yankees, Bellinger declined a $25 million option for the 2026 season, opting instead for a $5 million buyout. This decision set the stage for his return to the Bronx, where he will continue to be a key player in the Yankees’ lineup as they aim for success in the upcoming seasons.

The Yankees are counting on Bellinger’s power and experience to enhance their roster, and his return is seen as a significant move in the competitive landscape of Major League Baseball. The team’s management and fans alike are optimistic about what this deal means for their prospects in the 2024 season and beyond.
