Dave Chappelle Shares Humorous Encounter with Anne Bancroft

Comedian Dave Chappelle recently recounted a humorous yet awkward moment from his first encounter with the late actress Anne Bancroft. This recollection came during a segment in the upcoming HBO documentary titled Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man!, which celebrates the extensive career of the legendary filmmaker Mel Brooks.

Chappelle’s ‘Mrs. Robinson’ Joke Falls Flat

During the documentary, Chappelle reminisced about his initial meeting with Bancroft, who was married to Brooks. He recalled how Bancroft warmly greeted him, expressing admiration for his work. “She comes and says, ‘Oh, Mel says so many wonderful things about you,’” Chappelle shared. Her enthusiasm was palpable, but instead of responding formally, he decided to deliver a joke referencing her iconic role in the 1967 film The Graduate.

“I go, ‘Oh, you’re not trying to seduce me, are you, Mrs. Robinson?’” Chappelle said, referring to Bancroft’s character, who is known for her affair with a younger man. The joke, however, did not garner the reaction he anticipated, leading to an uncomfortable silence in the room. Chappelle humorously noted that the only sound was the “labored breathing” of his co-star Dom DeLuise, adding, “That was really f—– terrible and hilarious.”

Fond Memories of Mel Brooks

Chappelle also took a moment to reflect on his fond memories of working with Mel Brooks. He recounted lunches shared with the comedy legend and moments spent with Carl Reiner, who was directing a movie nearby. Chappelle described witnessing Brooks and Reiner perform their famous routine, The 2000 Year Old Man, as a highlight of his comedic journey, calling it “the greatest comedy routine by two of the greatest comics.”

The documentary Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man! is set to air on HBO Max on January 22, 2026. It will feature a variety of interviews with prominent figures in the entertainment industry, including Ben Stiller, Jerry Seinfeld, Nathan Lane, Judd Apatow, and Amy Schumer. This two-part series aims to highlight Brooks’ remarkable career that has spanned over seven decades.

Chappelle’s candid storytelling showcases the unpredictable nature of comedy and the personal connections that often underpin it. His experience with Bancroft serves as a reminder that even seasoned comedians can encounter unexpected challenges in their craft.
