The Center Line Panthers girls basketball team triumphed over adversity once again, securing a hard-fought victory against the Warren Mott Marauders with a score of 45-33 on December 7, 2023. Despite facing numerous challenges, including player absences due to illness and injuries, the Panthers improved their overall record to 7-2 and their league record to 1-1 in the Macomb Area Conference Silver Division.
Center Line’s coach, Josh Banks, highlighted the resilience of his team, stating, “We found a way to win another one, even with only seven available players.” The squad dressed just seven players for the match, with six taking the court for most of the game. Players have been battling sickness and injuries throughout the season, with the team starting with 12 players but now having only 10, with several not available for every game.
The Panthers demonstrated a strong start, outpacing their opponents with a 15-6 run in the first quarter. Warren Mott responded with an 11-9 second quarter, narrowing the gap to 24-17 at halftime. The Marauders, who have also faced their share of challenges this season, continued to fight back with a 14-7 third-quarter effort, tying the game at 31-31 as they entered the final quarter.
In the decisive fourth quarter, Center Line surged ahead with a commanding 14-2 run, sealing the win. “They left it all on the floor,” Banks remarked, commending his players’ determination.
The standout performer for Center Line was junior point guard Janiyah Thomas, who scored a game-high 20 points. Banks praised her as the league’s top player, saying, “Janiyah is having a great season. She leads us in every category this season.” Senior guard Madison Gilmore contributed significantly as well, adding 15 points, while Alaya Verbrugge, a senior forward, despite scoring only four points, was instrumental on the boards, securing 14 rebounds.
The Panthers’ performance is particularly noteworthy given their lack of depth. Banks acknowledged the limitations of the program, stating, “It’s not like we’re a big school with large rosters. We don’t traditionally get a lot of girls coming out for basketball like the big schools. But I think our work ethic is as good as anybody.” Last season, Center Line managed only two wins, making their current success even more impressive.
Warren Mott, despite the loss, had contributions from senior Conamaro Ndana, who recently signed with the University of Florida for soccer, leading her team with nine points. Teammates Zeena Ndana and Katelyn Wioskowski each scored eight points in the effort.
As the season progresses, both teams will continue to navigate their respective challenges, but the Panthers’ resilience and determination remain a significant highlight in the current basketball landscape.
