Detroit Lakes Alpine Ski Team Claims Third at Breakaways Invite

The Detroit Lakes alpine ski team delivered strong performances at the Breakaways Invite held at Powder Ridge on January 8, 2024. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams secured third-place finishes, showcasing their competitive spirit and skill on the slopes.

In the boys’ competition, Detroit Lakes amassed a total of 281 team points. Leading the charge was Tristan Bristlin, who achieved a remarkable first-place finish with a time of 46.04 seconds. His exceptional performance underscored the team’s overall effort, with fellow team members also making significant contributions. Owen Anderson placed ninth with a time of 51.97, while Mason Kemper finished 15th at 56.08 seconds, both securing spots in the top 20.

The remainder of the boys’ team included Beckett Anderson in 21st place (1:00.51), Brayton Bremseth in 25th (1:02.17), Rory Steinert in 28th (1:04.34), Lance Skalin in 33rd (1:06.67), and Beau Bjerke in 35th (1:14.08). Their efforts collectively contributed to the team’s podium finish.

On the girls’ side, Detroit Lakes secured 226 team points, placing them third in the competition. Alexa Bristlin stood out by claiming third place with a time of 52.15 seconds. Additional strong performances came from Marlo Schmitz, who finished ninth at 57.15, and Merida Jansen, who took 16th place with a time of 59.94.

Completing the girls’ team were Ruby Maki in 29th (1:13.82), Lilly Graham in 33rd (1:26.57), Ella Schuld in 34th (1:27.53), Ella Johnson in 37th (1:29.22), and Dassah Dahlin in 43rd (1:37.96). Their collective efforts helped secure a commendable finish against tough competition.

The results of the Breakaways Invite highlight the growing strength of the Detroit Lakes alpine ski program. The boys’ team finished behind Lakes Area, which topped the standings with 293 points, and Brainerd at 288 points. Meanwhile, the girls’ team trailed Brainerd in first with 264 points and Westonka in second at 230 points.

Looking ahead, the Lakers will return to competition at Giant Ridge in Biwabik on January 16, where they will aim to build on their recent successes and continue to improve throughout the season.
