Trump Discusses U.S. Control Over Venezuela’s Future Oil Wealth

President Donald Trump has indicated that there is no set timeline for how long the United States might maintain control over Venezuela. Speaking to The New York Times, Trump suggested that the U.S. could remain involved for “years” and perhaps “much longer,” emphasizing that “only time will tell” how the situation will unfold.

Trump’s remarks come in the wake of significant political developments in Venezuela, particularly following the capture of former President Nicolás Maduro. During the interview, Trump expressed a desire to “rebuild” Venezuela in a manner that benefits the U.S. economically. He highlighted the importance of oil in this strategy, stating, “We’re going to be using oil, and we’re going to be taking oil.” He further asserted that the U.S. aims to lower oil prices while providing much-needed financial assistance to Venezuela.

The President noted that his administration maintains “constant communication” with Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodríguez. He also mentioned that Secretary of State Marco Rubio is frequently in touch with her. This ongoing dialogue suggests a deepening relationship as the U.S. navigates its role in the region.

Concerns have emerged regarding the future landscape of Venezuela following Maduro’s ousting. Trump revealed plans for Venezuela to turn over between 30-50 million barrels of oil to the U.S. He also hinted at broader implications for surrounding Latin American countries, stating that a U.S. operation in Colombia “sounds good” and claiming that Cuba is “ready to fall.”

During the interview, Trump took an off-the-record call from Colombian President Gustavo Petro. Despite previous tensions between the two leaders, Trump described the conversation as an “honor” on the social media platform Truth Social. He expressed appreciation for Petro’s tone and indicated a willingness to meet in the near future. Furthermore, arrangements are reportedly underway for Rubio and Petro to convene in Washington.

As the geopolitical dynamics shift in the region, the U.S. appears poised to play a significant role in shaping Venezuela’s future, particularly regarding its oil resources. The coming months will likely reveal how effectively the U.S. can leverage its position and what the implications will be for both Venezuela and its neighbors.
