Remembering John (Jack) Paul Brown: A Life Well-Lived

John (Jack) Paul Brown, aged 92, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2025, surrounded by his loving family in San Pedro, California. His life was marked by rich experiences, deep connections, and a commitment to family and community.

Born on March 10, 1933, to Robert and Agnes Brown in Long Beach, California, Jack’s early years were spent in San Pedro. He often recalled moments from his childhood, such as catching tadpoles at Averill Park and selling newspapers to sailors arriving at the port. Jack’s first job was with Helen Grace Chocolates, where he was among the first employees. His formative years also included serving as a Civilian Air Warden during World War II, a role he took on alongside his father.

Jack’s educational journey began at Mary Star of the Sea Elementary School, followed by St. Anthony’s High School in Long Beach. Before the construction of the Vincent Thomas Bridge, he would travel by ferry across the harbor to reach school. While in high school, he excelled in sports, particularly as a distance runner on the Track and Field team, earning numerous accolades for his performance.

After completing his education with a degree in Drafting, Jack embarked on a career at Northrop Grumman. His entrepreneurial spirit emerged when he founded his own business, creating job opportunities for friends and colleagues he met throughout his career.

In 1969, Jack met Rita Cebula, the love of his life. They married on April 17, 1971, and together they welcomed two children, Dennis in 1972 and Julie in 1975. The couple was deeply involved in their community, particularly in their church, where Rita dedicated 25 years to teaching at Holy Trinity School.

Jack’s interests were diverse. He enjoyed family vacations, gardening, and various DIY projects. He had a passion for coin collecting and was known for his unique sense of humor, always ready to make others laugh. Each day began with a cup of coffee, a crossword puzzle, and a thorough examination of the stock market.

He is survived by his children, Dennis and Julie, and his grandchildren, Natalie and Vincent. Jack also leaves behind his sister, Agnes Welsh, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rita, his parents, Robert and Agnes, his brother, Robert, his sister, Phyllis Smith, and his nephews, Bob and Tom Smith.

A funeral mass will be held on January 10, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church, followed by burial at Green Hills Memorial Park. Family and friends are encouraged to share their condolences and memories by signing the guestbook at mcnerneysmortuary.com.

Jack Brown’s legacy of love, humor, and dedication to family and community will be cherished by all who knew him.
