Vallejo Native William Newman Remembered for Impactful Career

William Arthur “Bill” Newman, a prominent figure in education and the Nevada Air National Guard, passed away peacefully at his home in Sun City West, Arizona, on January 15, 2025. He was born in Vallejo, California, in 1949 and dedicated his life to teaching and mentoring students in the field of computer science.

A proud graduate of Hogan High School in 1967, Bill went on to earn degrees from the University of Nevada, Reno, and later a Ph.D. from Canterbury University in New Zealand. His academic journey led him to teach at several institutions, including UNR, University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), and Texas A&M International University. At Texas A&M International, he held the esteemed position of Distinguished Professor and also served as interim Dean of the School of Business.

During his career, Bill coauthored multiple textbooks on computer programming, which significantly contributed to the educational resources available for students and educators alike. His achievements were recognized in 1998 when he was named Computer Educator of the Year by the International Association for Computer Information Systems, highlighting his influence in the field of computer education.

Beyond academia, Bill had a notable military career, serving for 27 years as a command officer in the Nevada Air National Guard. His extensive experience in data security consultancy, particularly within the casino industry, further showcased his expertise and commitment to the field.

Bill was not only known for his professional accomplishments but also for his vibrant personality. An avid skier and adventurer, he was cherished by friends and colleagues for his easygoing nature, insightful advice, and great sense of humor. His legacy extends beyond his professional life, leaving an indelible mark on those who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Anthea Newman, his brother, Robert Newman (Judi), and his niece, Jennifer Newman (David Engel).
