Thailand Releases 18 Cambodian Soldiers Amid Renewed Ceasefire

Thailand released 18 Cambodian soldiers on March 13, 2024, as part of a renewed ceasefire agreement between the two nations. The release follows a series of violent border clashes that have resulted in significant casualties and displacement. Authorities from both countries confirmed the soldiers’ transfer, a move intended to ease tensions after weeks of conflict.

The ceasefire, which took effect at noon on March 9, 2024 (0500 GMT), ended approximately 20 days of hostilities that claimed at least 101 lives and displaced over 500,000 civilians on both sides. The clashes had escalated to include military aircraft sorties, rocket exchanges, and artillery bombardments.

Details of the Release

The soldiers were handed over at a border checkpoint at 10 am (0300 GMT) on March 13, after spending 155 days in Thai custody. Maly Socheata, spokesperson for the Cambodian Defence Ministry, described the soldiers as “heroic soldiers” upon their return. The governor of Cambodia’s Battambang province, Sok Lou, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the significance of their repatriation.

During their detention, Thailand’s Foreign Ministry stated that the soldiers were treated “in accordance with international humanitarian law and principles.” The release was part of a broader agreement that aimed to curtail ongoing violence and foster dialogue between the nations. Delays in the handover occurred due to allegations from Thailand regarding ceasefire violations by Cambodia, which were firmly denied by Cambodian officials.

Context of the Ceasefire Agreement

The recent flare-up in violence followed the collapse of an earlier ceasefire deal brokered by former U.S. President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The renewed ceasefire agreement not only facilitated the release of the soldiers but also underscored the need for ongoing negotiations to prevent further escalation.

Mirjana Spoljaric, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, remarked on the importance of this development, stating, “Today’s release and repatriation of prisoners of war allows families to be reunited and marks an important step in translating the commitments outlined in the Joint Statement into action.”

As the situation stabilizes, both Thailand and Cambodia are expected to engage in further discussions aimed at ensuring lasting peace and addressing the humanitarian challenges faced by those affected by the violence. The international community continues to monitor the developments closely, emphasizing the importance of diplomacy in resolving conflicts in the region.
