Oregon Hospital Pioneers Robotic Surgery for Liver Tumors

Good Shepherd Health Care System in Hermiston, Oregon, has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first health care facility in the state to implement the HistoSonics Edison Robotic System for the treatment of liver tumors. This advanced technology employs noninvasive ultrasound waves to target and destroy tumors, marking a notable advancement in liver cancer treatment.

In a press release, the hospital announced that Dr. Kevin Burns, an interventional radiologist, successfully performed the first procedure using this innovative system in October 2023. “Good Shepherd is the first hospital in the state of Oregon to have the HistoSonics machine,” Dr. Burns stated. “We’ve already successfully treated many patients here.”

Revolutionizing Liver Tumor Treatments

The HistoSonics Edison Robotic System features a sonic beam therapy platform that utilizes a technique known as histotripsy. This method harnesses ultrasound energy to obliterate liver tumors in a single outpatient procedure, without damaging the surrounding tissues. Dr. Burns emphasized the technology’s unique capability, noting, “This technology is pretty unique in that it doesn’t damage the structures around the tumor or in front of the tumor.”

This innovative approach allows for the treatment of one or multiple tumors during a single session, representing a powerful therapeutic option for patients. “We can treat one tumor or multiple tumors in the same setting, so this is a very powerful therapy,” Dr. Burns explained. He also highlighted the treatment’s versatility, indicating that there are no lifetime limits on the number of procedures a patient can undergo. “If a new tumor develops or you need another retreatment, that’s absolutely possible,” he added.

Expanding Treatment Options

Currently, Good Shepherd Surgical Services is offering treatment for liver tumors specifically to patients aged 18 and older. Plans are already in place to broaden treatment to include other organs in the future, enhancing the hospital’s capacity to address various types of cancers.

The introduction of the HistoSonics Edison Robotic System not only positions Good Shepherd Health Care System at the forefront of medical innovation in Oregon but also significantly impacts patient care. The ability to noninvasively treat liver tumors represents a promising advancement in oncology, providing patients with effective options that minimize recovery time and reduce complications.

As the health care system continues to expand its services and adopt cutting-edge technology, patients in Hermiston and beyond can look forward to improved treatment outcomes and enhanced quality of life. This pioneering achievement sets a new standard for liver cancer treatment in the region.
