Beloved Matriarch Ann Marie Hanson Passes Away at 97

Ann Marie Hanson, a cherished matriarch, passed away peacefully at the age of 97 on December 20, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at her home in Blue Earth, Minnesota. Her departure marks the end of a remarkable life dedicated to family, service, and community.

Born on August 13, 1928, Ann Marie Loge was the daughter of Hans and Mildred Loge. She married Lyle Kenneth Hanson on September 17, 1950, and together, they nurtured three children: Peggy Ann Schulman (David), Sue Marie Tharaldson (Roger), and Brian Lyle Hanson (Shari). Their family life was characterized by traditions, including nightly prayers before dinner and bedtime.

The couple shared a deep bond, with Ann being wholly devoted to Lyle throughout their 68 years of marriage. Ann was not only a wonderful wife and mother but also a doting grandmother to her grandchildren, including Jill Boyanovsky (Chris), Jen Lee (Damon), Joslynn Malam (Scott), Thor Wayne Hanson, and Noah Kenneth Hanson (fiancée Meghan Erickson). She also took joy in her role as a great-grandmother to Jace Harris and Kayla Tharaldson and had a special affection for her three grand-dogs, Duke, Winston, and Jax.

Ann’s culinary talents were well-known. She was a fabulous cook and precise baker, renowned for her holiday specialties. This year, she was particularly excited about making Krumkake with Jen and Shari, even if she couldn’t prepare Lefsa as planned. Her passion for cooking extended to exploring new recipes and creating beautifully arranged tables for family gatherings.

Community Contributions and Legacy

Throughout her life, Ann worked tirelessly, beginning as a nanny at the age of 11 for Clair and Isabelle Speed. At 50, she persuaded Lyle to purchase a restaurant, which they named “The Kaffe Hus,” located on Broadway in Albert Lea. The establishment became a beloved local spot, showcasing her commitment to service and culinary excellence.

Ann was also employed by National T grocery, First Lutheran Church, and the Standard Café. Her intelligence and love for games were evident through her avid participation in bridge and other family games. She was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church, where she contributed to the community for over 80 years.

Ann’s family history is marked by military service; both her father and husband served in the United States military, with her brother Mike losing his life in the Korean War. She is survived by two brothers, Gene and Terry Loge.

Ann Marie Hanson was a strong-willed woman with a passion for life. She enjoyed dressing up for visits, dancing, and traveling with family. A visitation and celebration of her life will be held on December 30, 2025, from 12:00 to 14:00 at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, followed by burial at East Freeborn Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a favorite charity in Ann’s honor.

Her legacy as a devoted family member, talented cook, and community contributor will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.
