Bishop Amat Secures Dominant Victory Over Pioneer in Tournament Final

Bishop Amat delivered an impressive performance at the 71st Annual Doc Sooter Holiday Classic, decisively defeating Pioneer 92-45 in the championship game held at Covina High School on December 27, 2025. This victory not only showcased the team’s skill but also marked a triumphant return for senior player Chrisopher Blakely Jr., who became eligible to play after the transfer sit-out period.

Blakely, standing at 6 feet 6 inches, made an immediate impact in his second game, scoring a game-high 21 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. His physical presence on the court posed significant challenges for the previously undefeated Pioneer team, which fell to 15-1 with this loss. The Lancers improved their record to 17-3 following this commanding win.

Bishop Amat’s young players also demonstrated their capabilities. Sophomore Aiden Shaw, who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP), contributed 15 points, while freshman Omar Cox-Labomme added 19 points with three three-pointers. Shaw emphasized the importance of defensive play, stating, “Our coach said we needed to play defense to win the game, just focus on defense and rebounds.”

Blakely’s return to the team has been a game-changer for Bishop Amat. He initially played for the school before transferring to St. Pius X/St. Matthias and returning for his senior season. In the championship match, he scored eight of Amat’s first ten points, showcasing his ability to dominate the paint. Coach Brandon Ertle praised Blakely’s contribution, noting, “He definitely makes a difference for us, so we’re happy that he’s finally able to play.”

Pioneer struggled against Bishop Amat’s relentless defense and offensive pressure. Despite a strong individual performance from Nicholas Mata, who led Pioneer with 15 points, the team was unable to match the Lancers’ intensity. Isaiah Janicke also contributed with 14 points. The Titans attempted to mount a comeback with a brief 7-0 run that brought the score to 12-11, but Bishop Amat quickly responded with an 18-0 run, extending their lead to 30-11 by the second quarter.

Amat’s strategy focused on defensive execution and rebounding, which proved effective throughout the match. Coach Ertle highlighted the importance of preparation, stating, “We had a good morning practice in terms of covering stuff, and the kids did a good job of executing it.”

The championship game was a testament to Bishop Amat’s teamwork and resilience. As the team prepares for upcoming league play, Blakely’s presence is expected to enhance their performance further. Shaw expressed optimism about their future, noting, “It feels great, I can throw lobs and stuff. We really needed a big to guard all these bigs we’ll go against in league and in the playoffs.”

Bishop Amat’s victory in the Doc Sooter Holiday Classic not only adds a championship title to their accolades but also sets a strong tone for the remainder of the season.
