UPDATE: A groundbreaking flag football camp exclusively for girls took place today at the Pullman Community Center in Chicago, attracting over 150 participants. The Concrete Rose 773 organization hosted the event, which aims to empower young girls through sports, mentorship, and community connection.
The camp, held on July 22, 2023, is part of a growing movement to promote flag football among female athletes. “Flag football is one of the more growing sports,” stated Darrin Cotton Jr., founder and executive director of Concrete Rose 773. “Definitely, some of these girls got real skills.”
This year marks the second annual event, which is free and welcomes girls of all skill levels from the Chicagoland area and beyond, including participants from Wisconsin. As excitement filled the air, attendees engaged in drills focused on essential skills like catching and tackling.
Participant Anya Holt shared her enthusiasm, saying, “I just think females can do anything. It’s a way to be stronger, it helps you stay in shape. It keeps you mentally there.” She also expressed her aspirations, noting, “I did just recently get four offers to play at four different colleges, and that’s a big deal for me.”
Another camper, Molly O’Hara, highlighted the importance of camaraderie, stating, “I love the station work we get to work on individual skills, defense, offense. I am meeting so many new people, and I think that is so important for growing in the game.”
The camp not only teaches football skills but also emphasizes vital life lessons such as teamwork and resilience. “We try to teach them about life skills in general, whether that’s teamwork or understanding coaching, and then the fundamentals that translate outside of the playing area,” Cotton Jr. explained.
The event is strategically designed to build confidence in young athletes, preparing them for potential collegiate opportunities in sports. “It’s amazing to see how these girls grow, both on and off the field,” Cotton Jr. added.
This camp is more than just a sports event; it’s a transformative experience aimed at instilling confidence and building community among young female athletes. The energy and enthusiasm at Pullman Community Center today highlight a significant cultural shift in how girls view sports and their capabilities.
As flag football continues to surge in popularity among girls, Concrete Rose 773 is poised to lead the way in fostering talent and empowering the next generation of female athletes. Stay tuned for more updates and developments from this inspiring movement.
