UPDATE: Williams College men’s basketball coach Kevin App has just achieved a milestone victory, securing his 200th career win during a nail-biting match against Carleton College on December 20, 2023, in Daytona Beach, Florida. This victory marks App as only the second coach in the program’s history to reach this landmark.
In a tense game, the Ephs narrowly defeated Carleton with a score of 73-71. Reflecting on his achievement, App humorously noted, “My thoughts are I’m getting older,” emphasizing his humility despite the significant accomplishment. The win, which capped off a successful trip, was celebrated by the team upon returning to the locker room.
First-year guard Khalil Carlson expressed excitement about being part of the moment, stating, “We didn’t know it until we got back to the locker room. Obviously, we had to shower him with water. It was really special to celebrate.” The team enjoyed a celebratory dinner with families later that night, making the achievement even more memorable.
App, who is in his 11th year coaching the Ephs, holds an impressive record of 200-83. He joins the ranks of Harry Sheehy, who leads with a record of 324-104 from 1984 to 2000, as the only coaches in the Division III era to reach the 200-win mark. App has surpassed former coaches Dave Paulsen and Mike Maker, both of whom had notable tenures at Williams.
The Ephs’ journey to this milestone began with App’s 100th win on November 15, 2019, against Worcester State. App’s coaching style focuses on developing players, with wins naturally following. “You surround yourself with good people and good players and the wins take care of themselves,” he remarked.
As the Ephs prepare for their next game against Worcester State on January 3, 2024, App remains focused on his team’s growth and performance. “Most coaches are locked into whatever that day brings,” he stated, highlighting his dedication to coaching.
The Williams community and fans are eager to support App and the Ephs as they aim for more victories in the upcoming season. This milestone not only celebrates App’s individual achievements but also symbolizes the hard work and dedication of the entire Williams basketball program.
Stay tuned for more updates as the Ephs continue their season and seek to build on this historic win.
