Inspired by the Georgetown Loop Railroad’s holiday train, Cotton’s vision came to life when the bus was decked out with wrapping paper, garland, Christmas lights, and more. The bus is not just a mode of transportation; it’s a celebration on wheels, complete with visits from Santa and an elf.
The Breckmas Bus officially began its holiday routes earlier this month and will continue until December 30, 2023. Each year, local daycares bring children aboard for a magical ride where they meet Santa, receive small gifts, and enjoy a piece of candy. Cotton emphasizes that even kids who miss Santa can still catch a treat if they spot the bus.
“What we’ve created is a fun scavenger hunt for families,” Cotton explained. The bus rotates its routes unpredictably, adding an element of surprise for riders returning from skiing or commuting home.
When passengers are lucky enough to board the Breckmas Bus, they are greeted by spirited drivers donning Santa hats and festive attire. Cotton encouraged the drivers to embrace the holiday cheer, and they responded enthusiastically, bringing in speakers to play Christmas music while wearing bright light necklaces.
“It’s really been fun for everyone,” Cotton stated, highlighting the joy the bus brings to both passengers and drivers alike. The whimsical decor includes a small Christmas tree surrounded by candy and presents, creating a festive atmosphere that elevates the daily commute.
The Breck Free Ride’s dedication to community engagement is evident in this initiative, which is part of a broader effort to create a “fun transit agency.” Other events throughout the year include a celebration for their 1-millionth passenger, a “bus to work day” with free coffee and donuts, and birthday celebrations featuring cake for riders.
