Swiss skiers triumphed in the World Cup giant slalom held on January 6, 2024, at Val d’Isère, France, where Loic Meillard led a complete podium sweep for Switzerland. After starting the second run in fifth position, Meillard showcased remarkable skill and determination, clinching victory by a narrow margin of 0.18 seconds over teammate Luca Aerni. Marco Odermatt, who currently leads the overall World Cup standings, rounded out the Swiss dominance, finishing just 0.33 seconds behind Meillard.
The challenging conditions on the steep Bellevarde course, primarily shaded during the race, posed difficulties for many competitors. Despite the obstacles, Timon Haugan from Norway secured fourth place, while Stefan Brennsteiner, who had led after the first run, fell to fifth.
This victory marks Meillard’s eighth World Cup win and his first since taking the giant slalom title at the finals in Sun Valley, Idaho, last season. The Swiss team has demonstrated exceptional prowess in men’s skiing, especially following their strong performance at the previous season’s world championships. As the Milan Cortina Olympics approach, they are emerging as the team to beat.
American skier River Radamus achieved the fastest second run, moving up from a 21st place finish in the morning to secure sixth overall. In a notable performance for the U.S. Ski Team, Ryder Sarchett also excelled, achieving a career-best finish in tenth place.
Looking ahead, the excitement continues on the Bellevarde course with a slalom race scheduled for Sunday, promising more thrilling action for ski fans and competitors alike.
