Students Shine in Holiday Events and Community Service Projects

The latest updates from local high schools showcase a vibrant mix of holiday spirit and community engagement as students partake in various events and projects throughout December 2023. From festive concerts to service initiatives, schools are fostering a sense of camaraderie and support among students and their communities.

Engaging in Holiday Cheer

Students from LeRoy High School demonstrated their holiday spirit by participating in a Christmas caroling event at Carriage Crossing Senior Living in Arcola. This visit allowed student council members to spread festive joy among the residents, reinforcing connections between the youth and the elderly in the community.

In addition to caroling, the Math Club got creative by decorating a “geometree” during a festive gathering. On December 3, students enjoyed sweet treats while crafting paper snowflakes to adorn the tree, enhancing the holiday ambiance.

An annual highlight, the combined choir and band from BHJH and BHRA delivered a captivating Christmas concert last Thursday, performing classics such as “White Winter Hymnal” and a medley from “Go the Distance/Defying Gravity.” The concert was recorded and is set to air on WITY on December 15, making it accessible to a wider audience via the BHRA YouTube channel.

Fostering Community and Growth

Promoting a growth mindset, math and science teachers introduced the STEM Student of the Month award to recognize students overcoming challenges in these subjects. This initiative encourages perseverance and dedication to learning. The inaugural honorees include Isabel Bullington, Justin Pettice, Brianna Strohl, and Karsyn Lamar.

The Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) recently hosted an ice-skating social at the UI Ice Arena, providing members an opportunity to bond outside the classroom. This gathering emphasizes the importance of teamwork and collaboration among aspiring business leaders.

In another display of community spirit, the National Honor Society organized a Senior Citizens Luncheon, allowing students to connect with local seniors and express gratitude for their contributions. This event, complemented by musical performances, showcased the students’ commitment to serving their community.

Students also participated in a food drive, successfully collecting over 1,200 items for the PBL Area Food Pantry, demonstrating their dedication to helping those in need during the holiday season.

The annual Thanksgiving Turkey Tournament saw local teams, including Cerro Gordo and Warrensburg-Latham, compete for the title. Despite inclement weather causing schedule changes, LeRoy emerged victorious, securing first place.

In addition to sports, the school’s annual Madrigal dinner brought together students and community members for a festive evening filled with music and merriment. The show featured traditional songs and a light-hearted debate over the best Christmas movie, engaging the audience in a lively discussion.

With a focus on growth, service, and celebration, these events underline the dedication of students and staff in fostering a supportive and vibrant educational environment during the holiday season.
