Denver Betterment Committee Celebrates 25 Years of Community Impact

UPDATE: The Denver Betterment Committee is celebrating a significant milestone this year, marking 25 years of transforming the community through beautification projects and events. Established in 2000, the committee has consistently enriched the lives of Denver residents and visitors alike.

With 14 dedicated members, including long-time member Caryl Tjaden, the committee is actively involved in enhancing the aesthetic appeal of Denver. “We aim to give the streets of Denver a more appealing look to residents and visitors passing through,” Tjaden stated, emphasizing the committee’s core mission.

The group has been instrumental in various initiatives, such as installing 24 vibrant ground planters with flowers, replacing difficult-to-maintain hanging baskets. These planters, adorned with welcoming signs, are cared for by committee members and local volunteers.

In addition to beautification efforts, the committee has added two memorial benches in downtown Denver, sourced from Kay Park Recreation in Janesville, supporting local commerce. Other notable projects include picnic tables, children’s digger backhoes, and decorative rocks spelling “Denver” along the highway, enhancing community spirit and pride.

As seasonal decorations evolve, the committee has introduced cornstalks and sunflowers, although some past displays, like scarecrows, were discontinued. A poignant tribute comes from a special project in honor of Tjaden’s late husband, where a tree was planted near the elementary school he served for 26 years.

One of the committee’s most popular events, the annual “Old Fashioned Christmas,” started in 2003 and has grown immensely. Last year, the event garnered over 500 votes for favorite trees and table settings, showcasing the community’s enthusiasm. Tjaden recalls the event’s inception as a way to bring festive cheer to Denver, and it has since blossomed into a beloved tradition.

The committee continues to receive generous donations and grants, allowing them to accumulate funds for future projects. Recent initiatives include lighting installations on evergreen trees in memory of loved ones, demonstrating the community’s support and appreciation for these beautification efforts.

Tjaden expressed gratitude for the positive feedback, stating, “It’s surprising the number of compliments we get, especially for the flowers. It pays to do these things, and you feel like people appreciate it.”

As the Denver Betterment Committee looks forward to the future, they remain committed to enriching their community, inviting new members to join in their mission. With ongoing projects and upcoming events, Denver residents can expect even more vibrant and engaging initiatives ahead.
