Minnesota United Acquires Midfielder Peter Stroud from New York Red Bulls

Minnesota United FC has secured midfielder Peter Stroud from the New York Red Bulls in a significant offseason trade. According to a report from The Athletic on March 15, 2024, the Loons will send $475,000 in General Allocation Money to the Red Bulls in exchange for the 23-year-old player.

Stroud, who accumulated 1,720 minutes in Major League Soccer (MLS) last season, contributed three assists during his time on the field. In 2023, he played 844 minutes, and in the previous year, he logged 1,020 minutes. A product of the Red Bulls’ homegrown system, Stroud also spent two years with the youth teams at London’s West Ham United, competing at both the Under-18 and U23 levels.

The New Jersey native has represented the U.S. at various youth national teams, showcasing his potential on the international stage. Standing at 5 feet 10 inches and weighing 150 pounds, Stroud is expected to fill a vital role as a central or defensive midfielder for the Loons, particularly after the departure of Hassani Dotson to free agency following the 2025 season.

Stroud’s contract with the Red Bulls included options for the 2026 and 2027 seasons. During the 2025 season, he earned $145,003 in guaranteed compensation, as reported by the MLS Players Association. In comparison, Dotson had a contract valued at $625,800 a year prior.

The midfielder’s background includes a stellar collegiate career at Duke University, where he made history by becoming the first player to win two Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Midfielder of the Year awards. In 2022, he was the runner-up for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy, awarded to the top college soccer player in the United States.

Stroud comes from a soccer-oriented family; his older brother, Jared Stroud, currently plays midfield for D.C. United. The 29-year-old has previously competed for teams including St. Louis, Austin FC, and the New York Red Bulls.

This trade marks an important step for Minnesota United as they look to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season. With Stroud’s notable skills and experience, the Loons aim to enhance their midfield options and continue their competitive pursuits in MLS.
