MSP Airport Unveils $242 Million Renovation at Terminal 1

Travelers at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) will notice a significant upgrade as the airport has completed a major renovation of Terminal 1. This ambitious project, valued at $242 million, was a collaborative effort between the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) and Delta Air Lines, aimed at creating a modern and unified design for six of the terminal’s seven concourses and 75 gate hold rooms.

The renovations commenced in the fall of 2023 and are part of a broader strategy to enhance the passenger experience at MSP, which serves as Delta’s second largest hub, capturing a 70% market share of the airport’s traffic.

Transformative Changes Enhance Passenger Experience

The renovation marks the largest interior overhaul of Terminal 1 in the airport’s history. According to Brian Ryks, CEO of the MAC, “In a matter of two years, we have witnessed a major transformation of the post-security areas of Terminal 1 that elevates the passenger experience — from the checkpoints to the gate areas.” This transformation not only modernizes the physical space but also enhances the overall customer service that MSP is known for.

Among the numerous improvements made, travelers can expect to see new terrazzo or carpet flooring, updated wall finishes, and energy-efficient LED lighting fixtures. The gate areas have undergone a comprehensive refresh, featuring new seating, counters, and signage to create a more welcoming environment.

Modern Facilities and Enhanced Information Access

A particularly noteworthy addition is the installation of dynamic gate signs, which provide real-time flight and destination information, allowing passengers to easily access important updates from further down the concourse. These upgrades reflect a commitment to improving the travel experience, making it more efficient and enjoyable.

The current renovations were conducted concurrently with the final phases of a decade-long Airport Modernization Program, which focused on expanding and modernizing pre-security areas. This program included significant upgrades to checkpoints, ticketing, and baggage claim facilities. The MAC has invested $182.5 million in this initiative, while Delta has contributed $60 million, underscoring the partnership between the two entities in enhancing the airport’s infrastructure.

As MSP continues to evolve, these renovations are set to make a lasting impact on travelers and support the airport’s reputation as a leader in customer service and operational efficiency.
