French production and exhibition powerhouse Pathé has taken a significant step towards revitalizing its English-language film division by appointing Ben Browning, the president of motion pictures at FilmNation, as co-CEO of Pathé U.K. This announcement was made on March 14, 2024, as the company aims to enhance its film and television offerings for global audiences.
In his new role, Browning will partner with Faith Penhale, currently serving as co-CEO of Pathé U.K. Together, they will spearhead the expansion of the studio’s activities, which include both film and television productions. Both executives will report to Ardavan Safaee, chairman of Pathé Films. This strategic leadership duo is positioned to make a significant impact on the company’s international presence.
Browning, who will be relocating from Los Angeles to London, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. An Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-winning producer, he has led FilmNation since 2023, previously holding the position of president of production and acquisitions since 2014. Under his guidance, FilmNation produced several acclaimed films, such as Arrival, The Big Sick, Promising Young Woman, and Anora. Notably, Pathé highlighted that Browning’s appointment connects him with the financier-producers of two of the last four best picture Oscar winners, CODA and Anora.
The collaboration between Browning and Penhale is seen as a strategic move to position Pathé as a prominent player in the global film and television landscape. The company aims to produce and finance British and European films that resonate with worldwide audiences, alongside premium television series.
In a statement, Safaee expressed enthusiasm about Browning’s selection: “We are delighted to announce that Ben has chosen to join Pathé in spearheading the revitalization of our international film lineup. His extensive experience, distinguished reputation, and impeccable taste align perfectly with our vision to establish Pathé as a leading European studio.”
Browning reflected on his new role, stating, “I am sincerely grateful for the trust Jérome Seydoux, Ardavan Safaee, and Faith Penhale are placing in me to help lead this move back into global film for Pathé — a legendary company that means so much to all lovers of cinema.”
Penhale also shared her excitement, noting, “I have known and admired Ben for years; his taste and passion is symbiotic with that of Pathé’s, with a dedication to identifying and supporting the most exciting filmmaker talent. We are fortunate at Pathé to have the independence and confidence to build for the long term, and I’m looking forward to working with Ben and leading Pathé U.K. into a new era.”
As Pathé embarks on this new chapter, the film industry will be watching closely to see how the fresh leadership will shape the company’s future endeavors in film and television production.
