Georgia Tech has officially extended the contract of head coach Brent Key for an additional five years, securing his position at the university through 2030. The new deal reportedly increases Key’s annual salary to an average of $6.5 million, a substantial rise of $2 million from his previous contract.
Key has made a significant impact since taking the helm of the Yellow Jackets. His record stands at 27-19, which includes an impressive 7-1 performance against ranked Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponents. Prior to his tenure, Georgia Tech struggled, posting a disappointing 10-38 record over the previous 48 games.
This season, Georgia Tech nearly reached the ACC championship game, finishing with a 6-2 record in conference play before a narrow loss to Pittsburgh. The team concluded the regular season with a record of 9-3, marking their best performance since 2014. The Yellow Jackets are now awaiting the announcement of their bowl game destination.
In a statement, Georgia Tech President Angel Cabrera praised the efforts of new athletic director Ryan Alpert, highlighting their commitment to enhancing the university’s athletic programs. Cabrera noted that they are focused on providing increased resources and support for Key and the football team.
Brent Key, a distinguished alumnus of Georgia Tech, played as an All-ACC lineman and graduated in 2000. His strong connection to the school was evident earlier this month when speculation arose about his potential departure for other coaching opportunities. Key firmly rejected these notions, stating, “Slice me open and see what colors I bleed.”
As Georgia Tech moves forward, the extension of Key’s contract signals a commitment to building a competitive football program. With the upcoming bowl game on the horizon, the university community remains optimistic about the future under Key’s leadership.
