San Francisco Giants’ Casey Schmitt Undergoes Wrist Surgery

Casey Schmitt, infielder for the San Francisco Giants, underwent surgery on his left wrist on January 16, 2024. The procedure, which involved the removal of a carpal boss—a bony growth on the back of the wrist—was announced by the team on the same day. Schmitt is expected to recover sufficiently to participate in spring training, which is set to commence in February in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The surgery typically requires a recovery period of approximately 8-10 weeks, allowing Schmitt to be ready or nearly so when Giants camp opens. The 26-year-old player had previously faced challenges with his wrist after being hit by a pitch during a game against the Miami Marlins on June 25, 2023. Despite negative results from both X-rays and a CAT scan at that time, he was placed on the 10-day injured list five days later.

Upon his return, Schmitt became the Giants’ everyday second baseman, hitting eight out of his career-high 12 home runs in the final three months of the season. Nevertheless, he struggled offensively, posting a batting average of just .220 and striking out 54 times in 214 at-bats following the wrist injury.

Schmitt’s Performance and Future Outlook

Before his injury, Schmitt was enjoying a productive June, filling in at third base for the injured Matt Chapman. During that month, he recorded a batting average of .333, alongside four home runs and 17 RBIs across 20 games. Overall, he concluded the season with a slash line of .237/.395/.401 over 95 games, achieving career highs in all major statistical categories.

Looking ahead, Schmitt is anticipated to enter spring training as the Giants’ starting second baseman. However, the team may consider adding a veteran player to their roster during the offseason. Other infield candidates for the position include Tyler Fitzgerald, Christian Koss, and Brett Wisely, who will compete for playing time as the team prepares for the upcoming season.

The Giants are optimistic about Schmitt’s recovery and are eager to see how he can contribute as they aim for success in the 2024 season.
