Edward Hospital in Naperville Earns ‘A’ Grade for Patient Safety

Edward Hospital in Naperville has received an “A” grade for patient safety from The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit organization that evaluates health care facilities. This grade is part of Leapfrog’s biannual assessment of hospitals across the United States, focusing on their effectiveness in preventing medical errors, accidents, injuries, and infections.

According to Leapfrog’s recent report, hospitals are graded on an A to F scale based on over 30 national performance measures. Cheri Moore, system assistant vice president of acute care quality and patient safety for Endeavor Health, emphasized that the hospital’s commitment to patient safety is bolstered by its participation in the Leapfrog survey. “We’re fully invested in having the safest health care for our patients,” Moore stated.

Consistent Performance and Focus on Safety

Since 2022, Edward Hospital has consistently received A and B grades, indicating a strong commitment to patient care. This fall’s “A” designation is part of a trend, as the hospital also achieved similar ratings in the spring of 2025, fall of 2024, and fall of 2023. In the spring of 2024 and 2023, it earned a B grade.

Moore expressed enthusiasm about the hospital’s performance this year, highlighting a numerical score provided by Leapfrog that reflects the hospital’s strong performance metrics. One area where Edward Hospital excelled was in managing complications during patient stays, particularly in infection control. “A really strong area of focus for us has been infections in the last 12 to 24 months,” Moore explained. The hospital has prioritized early removal of lines and tubes to reduce the risk of infections.

Edward Hospital outperformed the average in preventing bloodstream infections, further demonstrating its commitment to patient safety. The facility also implements measures such as bed alarms, bedsitters, and properly placed call lights to reduce the risk of falls, especially for patients experiencing dizziness or mobility issues.

Recognition Among Peers

Leapfrog evaluates patient falls in two categories: falls resulting in injury and falls resulting in broken hips. Edward Hospital scored above the average in both areas, showcasing its proactive approach to patient safety.

In total, six Endeavor Health hospitals earned A grades this fall. Alongside Edward Hospital, Elmhurst, Evanston, Glenbrook, Highland Park, and Northwest Community hospitals received top marks. Notably, Elmhurst Hospital stands out as one of only 11 hospitals nationwide, and three in Illinois, to have maintained an A grade in every evaluation period since the program’s inception in 2012.
